Liver tumors

Liver tumors can be categorized as primary and secondary.

• Primary tumors are those arising in the liver.

• Secondary tumors are those starting in different organs and spread to the liver.

As liver receives a regular supply of body from other organs, making it a prevalent site for metastasis. Secondary liver tumors are more prevalent compared to those arising from the liver itself.

Primary tumors of the liver are of two types, benign and malignant

Benign tumors

• Hemangioma

• Hepatic adenoma

• Biliary cystadenoma

• Infantile hemangioendothelioma

• Fibrous nodular Hyperplasia

Malignant primary tumor

• Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (The most common liver malignancy)

• Biliary cystadenocarcinoma

• Fibrolamellar carcinoma

• Cholangiocarcinoma

Risk factors

• CECT abdomen

• Cirrhosis

• Wilson disease

• Hepatitis B, C

• Hemochromatosis

• Membranous obstruction of IVC

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Hepatocellular carcinoma includes an increased level of Alfa-fetoprotein in the liver.

CT or MRI findings reveal liver with arterial lesions in combination with venous washout

Treatment

• Radiofrequency ablation

• Transarterial chemoembolization

• Transarterial Radioembolization

• Liver transplantation

• Percutaneous acetic acid injection

• Oral sorafenib
