Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain gets relieved after defecation
  • Looser stool during pain onset
  • More frequent stool at onset of pain
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Abdominal distension
  • Mucus during rectum

Alarming features

IBS does not present with the following manifestations and is suggestive of alternate pathology

  • Blood in stool
  • Family history of Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Progressive dysphagia

Diagnosis

Patient with IBS-specific symptoms in absence of alarming symptoms indicates IBS

Treatment

  • Antispasmodics
  • Antidiarrhoeal
  • Antidepressants and anxiolytics
  • Laxatives
  • Antibiotics
